ISCN Online Advisory Programme #17: Smart digital Urban Planning Processes

It is one of the most tangible, “material” challenges smart cities and regions need to find an answer to: Planning and optimising their built environment. Effective digital urban planning is more important than ever, whether a municipality faces shrinking, strong population growth, or the challenge of renewing its building stock.
In this Online Advisory Programme (OAP), the International Smart Cities Network brings together projects and examples from Germany and the UK that are using smart solutions to turbocharge urban planning processes.

Digitally driven effectiveness and efficiency in Urban Planning

How can urban and spatial planning processes become smarter? Which digital solutions enable cities and municipalities to better address the urgent need for transforming their built environment?

In this Online Advisory Programme of the International Smart Cities Network (ISCN), we will explore these questions together and examine concrete solutions from Germany and the United Kingdom. Following a brief overview from the ISCN on trends and levers for digitally supported urban planning and housing construction, Dr Anna Becker will present DiPlanung, a web-based solution for comprehensive and integrated process management in urban land-use planning, spatial planning and planning approval already in use in several German states. Milan Bogunovic from the UK’s Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government will then present the "Extract" project from the “Incubator for Artificial Intelligence”. This project uses AI to rapidly convert old paper planning documents into digital formats, thereby eliminating a significant gap between mediums for planning authorities in municipalities!
