National Dialogue Platform Smart Cities

To address the opportunities and challenges of digitalisation for urban development, the German government set up the National Dialogue Platform Smart Cities in 2016. The National Dialogue Platform Smart Cities was tasked with developing positions and recommendations for action on the digital transformation.

National Dialogue Platform Smart Cities 3.0

The third phase of the National Dialogue Platform Smart Cities was launched in August 2022 under the guiding theme of "Accelerated change and resilience".

Around 70 experts from cities, districts and municipalities, municipal umbrella organisations, the federal states and various federal ministries, scientific organisations, business, professional and social associations and civil society were represented in the National Dialogue Platform Smart Cities.

In 2016 and 2017, they jointly developed the Smart City Charter, the first set of values and objectives for the digital transformation from the perspective of urban development. To this end, the National Dialogue Platform Smart Cities assessed opportunities and risks and developed guidelines and recommendations for action. It presented further guidelines for local authorities with the "Data strategies for common good-oriented urban development" (in 2021) and the "Beschleunigter Wandel und Resilienz. Leitlinien für die Entwicklung resilienter Städte im digitalen Zeitalter. Nationale Dialogplattform Smart Cities" (in 2023).

Leitlinien für die Entwicklung resilienter Städte im digitalen Zeitalter. Nationale Dialogplattform Smart Cities" were presented. These had been jointly developed since the kick-off meeting in August 2022. These recommendations for action to strengthen municipal resilience through digitalisation were also discussed in two specialist workshops on the topics of "Urban resilience in climate change" and "Digital services of general interest" and at the second meeting in January 2023.
